A SOLDIER who saw nine comrades killed in Afghanistan told yesterday how he was stopped from becoming a cop — because he is the wrong colour.
Brave Lance Cpl Ben Mayer, a regimental police officer with the Royal Anglians, was shown capturing Taliban terrorists on a telly documentary screened last week.
But when he quit the Army last month to fulfil his ambition of becoming a cop, the Metropolitan Police refused to even send him a recruitment pack — and told him in a letter they were only “actively seeking to raise interest from black and minority ethnic communities and females”.

A white man who was wrongly charged with rape even though the victim said her attacker was black described his "nightmare" ordeal for the first time yesterday.
Mark Minick feared he would lose his girlfriend and children and contemplated suicide after he was charged on flawed DNA evidence.
During hours of questioning, three police officers claimed they had watertight DNA evidence linking him to the attack.
They told him one of his hairs had been found on the victim's ring. But they did not mention her statement describing her attacker as "black, large and tall".
Mr Minick is 5ft 6in and slim.
On Thursday at Southwark Crown Court, the prosecution admitted that it had no evidence against Mr Minick.
Yet despite being cleared of all allegations, the 26-year-old is suffering the "final injustice" of still having to wear an electronic tag.

GWENT'S top police chief revealed the force's budget is being put under strain by the vastly increasing cost of interpreters for immigrants.
Chief Constable Mike Tonge told the Argus the force would have spent around £150,000 on interpreters fees and translation costs to help translate more than 70 different languages by end of the financial year.

Bring on the Witch Doctors...Health Minister Manto Tshabalala Msimang on Thursday vowed to continue engaging traditional healers on health issues, saying they were important partners in the fight against HIV/Aids.
"Some people might be resisting traditional healers but I believe we are on the right track," she said.
Speaking during a meeting in Cape Town between the Health Department and traditional leaders on initiations and circumcision, Tshabalala-Msimang said no amount of pressure would discourage her from engaging with traditional leaders on crucial issues such as HIV and Aids.
It was wrong for certain individuals and organisations to try and force people to turn their backs on their culture and traditions.

A public school principal accused of performing religious rituals with candles, incense and chicken blood in an attempt to cleanse her high school of negative energy has been reassigned and will be fired, the Department of Education said Tuesday.
Maritza Tamayo, principal of the Unity Center for Urban Technologies, paid a woman named Gilda Fonte to lead several Santeria rituals at the Manhattan school during midwinter break in 2006, when students were not there, according to Richard Condon, the special commissioner of investigation for city schools. Tamayo coerced staff members to participate in and help pay for the cost of the ceremonies, investigators said.
